ALLMI — Association of Lorry Loader Manufacturers & Importers

ALLMI is the UK’s professional body for the lorry loader industry and the only organisation whose operator training scheme is formally endorsed by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE). Our drivers hold current ALLMI certification, which is recognised by Build UK, CSCS and the wider construction sector.

The ALLMI scheme requires operators to complete 15 theoretical and practical modules covering legislation, pre-operational checks, lift planning, safe operation and load security. Certification is valid for five years, with refresher assessment required on renewal.

  • HSE-endorsed training — the industry gold standard for lorry loader operators
  • Covers lorry loaders of all types, including Hiab, Palfinger and Fassi equipment
  • CSCS and Build UK approved — accepted on construction sites nationwide
  • Mandatory refresher cycle ensures our drivers stay up to date

Why ALLMI Matters on Site

Many construction sites and project managers require an ALLMI card before any lorry loader operation can begin. Without it, access may be refused and the job cannot proceed.

Holding current ALLMI certification means our operators have demonstrated competence independently — not just in-house training that cannot be independently verified.

It also satisfies insurers, principal contractors and HSE inspectors that the person operating the crane has been properly assessed.

CPCS in Practice

The CPCS Lorry Loader card (A36) is the benchmark competence card for lorry loader operators working in construction and civil engineering environments across the UK.

Three categories cover the full range of lorry loader attachments:

  • A36A — Hook (standard lifting)
  • A36B — Clamshell bucket
  • A36C — Hydraulic clamp

CPCS — Construction Plant Competence Scheme

The Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS) was launched in 2003 and has become the industry standard card scheme for plant operators working in construction, civil engineering and related sectors. Our drivers who hold a CPCS Lorry Loader (A36) card have passed a formal theory examination and a practical assessment conducted by an independent CPCS tester.

Unlike internal training records, the CPCS card can be verified online by any site manager or principal contractor. Red trained-operator cards are valid for two years; blue competence cards for five years. This visible, portable proof of competence is accepted on virtually every construction site in the UK.

  • Theory and practical assessment by an independent CPCS tester
  • Card verifiable online by any employer or site manager
  • Accepted on virtually every UK construction site
  • Covers all lorry loader attachment categories (A36A, A36B, A36C)
FORS Bronze — Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme logo Fleet Safety & Compliance

FORS Bronze — Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme

FORS (Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme) is the UK’s leading voluntary accreditation scheme for commercial vehicle operators. FORS Bronze is the entry-level accreditation and confirms that a fleet meets the legal compliance requirements and fundamental safety standards set out in the FORS Standard.

Achieving Bronze requires a formal audit covering vehicle safety, driver management, operational procedures, fuel and emissions management, and incident reporting. The audit is conducted annually by an independent FORS auditor, which means our accreditation reflects current — not historic — practice.

  • Independently audited every 12 months against the FORS Standard
  • Meets the mandatory requirements of the Safer Lorry Scheme
  • Demonstrates legal compliance across vehicles, drivers and operations
  • Required by 85% of contract decision-makers before signing with fleet operators

What FORS Bronze Covers

The FORS Bronze audit assesses a fleet operator across six key areas:

  • Management — policies, responsibilities, record-keeping
  • Vehicles — roadworthiness, safety equipment, maintenance
  • Drivers — licences, medicals, training records
  • Operations — route risk, load security, compliance
  • Safety — incident management, CCTV and direct vision
  • Environment — fuel consumption and emissions monitoring

What Logistics UK Membership Provides

As members, we benefit from regular compliance briefings, legislative updates, access to industry guidance and a network of transport professionals working to raise standards across the sector.

Logistics UK members collectively operate more than 200,000 lorries — approximately half the UK fleet. The association works with government, regulators and enforcement bodies to shape transport policy in the interests of safe, professional and sustainable road freight.

Logistics UK — Formerly the Freight Transport Association

Logistics UK (previously the Freight Transport Association, or FTA) is one of the largest trade associations in the UK, representing more than 18,000 organisations responsible for moving goods by road, rail, sea and air. Membership confirms that a transport operator is part of a professional body committed to compliance, safety and continuous improvement in road freight.

For customers commissioning hiab lorry hire, our Logistics UK membership is a straightforward signal that we take our obligations as a fleet operator seriously — from driver hours and vehicle maintenance to legislative compliance and environmental responsibility.

  • Member of one of the UK’s largest transport trade associations
  • Access to compliance guidance, briefings and legislative updates
  • Part of a network driving higher standards across UK road freight
  • Demonstrates commitment to professional fleet management
Hiab loader crane manufacturer logo Premium Loader Crane Equipment

Hiab — World-Leading Loader Crane Manufacturer

Hiab is the world’s leading provider of on-road load handling equipment. Founded in Sweden in 1944 as Hydrauliska Industri AB, the Hiab brand has become so synonymous with lorry-mounted cranes that “hiab” is widely used as a generic term for any lorry loader — though Hiab remains a specific, premium brand.

Our vehicles are equipped with genuine Hiab loader cranes, maintained to manufacturer specifications. Operating Hiab equipment requires training and competence in the characteristics of the specific machine — our drivers hold ALLMI certification relevant to the equipment they operate, ensuring every lift is carried out safely and efficiently.

  • Genuine Hiab loader crane equipment on our vehicles
  • Machines maintained to manufacturer service schedules
  • Drivers trained on the specific Hiab models they operate
  • Modern equipment reduces risk and increases precision on every job

Why Equipment Quality Matters

A lorry loader is only as reliable as the maintenance behind it. Older or poorly maintained cranes are a common source of on-site incidents — hydraulic failures, outrigger problems and overload situations are all more likely with equipment that has not been properly serviced.

Our commitment to Hiab equipment and proper servicing means the crane that arrives on your site has been checked, is within its rated capacity and will perform as expected — reducing the risk of delay, damage or incident.

CAZ Compliance Matters for Your Job

If your site is in or near a Clean Air Zone city, you need a lorry operator whose vehicles are confirmed compliant — otherwise daily charges can add up quickly and may disrupt the job.

Our Euro 6 fleet means we can operate in Bath, Birmingham, Bradford, Bristol, Portsmouth, Sheffield, Tyneside and London without incurring CAZ charges that would otherwise be passed on to you.

Emissions Compliance

Clean Air Zone Compliant Fleet

Clean Air Zones (CAZ) are charging areas in UK cities designed to reduce air pollution from older, higher-emission commercial vehicles. Heavy goods vehicles that do not meet the required emission standard face daily charges that can reach £50–£100 per vehicle in cities such as Bristol, Birmingham and Portsmouth.

Our fleet meets the Euro 6 emission standard, which is the threshold for CAZ compliance for HGVs. This means our lorries can operate in every current Clean Air Zone in England without incurring charges — and in London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) without ULEZ surcharges.

  • Euro 6 compliant fleet — no CAZ charges passed to customers
  • Operational in all current English CAZ cities and London ULEZ
  • Scotland LEZs (Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow) also covered
  • Avoids hidden surcharges that non-compliant operators add to invoices

Common Questions

Accreditation FAQs

Do your hiab operators need to be ALLMI certified?

There is no specific law requiring ALLMI certification, but there is a legal duty to ensure operators are trained and competent. ALLMI is the HSE-endorsed training scheme for lorry loaders, and many construction sites and principal contractors require an ALLMI card before work can begin. Our operators hold current ALLMI certification, which satisfies both the legal duty of competence and the practical requirements of most sites.

What is the difference between ALLMI and CPCS?

ALLMI is the trade association-led training and certification scheme specifically for lorry loader operators, endorsed by the HSE. CPCS (Construction Plant Competence Scheme) is the broader construction plant card scheme covering many types of plant and machinery, including lorry loaders (category A36). In practice, ALLMI is more widely recognised for lorry loader operations specifically, while CPCS is the standard across the construction sector generally. Holding both provides the strongest assurance of competence.

What does FORS Bronze mean for customers?

FORS Bronze confirms that our fleet has passed an independent annual audit covering vehicles, drivers, operations, safety and environmental performance. For customers, it means working with an operator whose practices have been externally verified — not just self-assessed. Many procurement teams and principal contractors require FORS Bronze or above before engaging a transport supplier.

Are your vehicles CAZ compliant?

Yes. Our fleet meets the Euro 6 emission standard required for heavy goods vehicles to operate in UK Clean Air Zones without incurring daily charges. This covers all current charging CAZ cities in England — Bath, Birmingham, Bradford, Bristol, Portsmouth, Sheffield and Tyneside — as well as London’s ULEZ. We do not pass CAZ charges on to customers because our vehicles do not incur them. See our Clean Air Zone guide for further detail.

What is Logistics UK (FTA)?

Logistics UK, formerly the Freight Transport Association (FTA), is one of the UK’s largest transport trade associations with over 18,000 member organisations. Membership confirms we are part of a professional body that provides compliance guidance, legislative briefings and industry representation. It is an indicator that we treat our obligations as a fleet operator — driver hours, vehicle maintenance, road safety — as professional commitments, not optional extras.
